Self-defense Training

Pragroshor works towards changing the conditions of a patriarchal society that allows, albeit perpetuates, sexual and gender-based violence through feminist conscious-raising. It organizes dialogues, discussions, and mobilizations on gender, feminism, and transformative leadership using novel methods of engagement, for students, activists, women’s groups/forums, and families of SGBV survivors. It also creates and curates a safe space where survivors and other allies can rest, work, seek guidance, engage with each other and collectively work towards promoting gender justice in the community and society at large. Based on this issue Pragroshor arranged self-defense training 2 times for empowered the survivors and by appreciation from donor they have arranged refreshers self-defense training for third time.

Self-defense training for survivors, Self-defense opens up the source of freedom for women in an imperfect world. Building confidence in physical resistance skills allows women to feel more capable and more at peace when in potentially dangerous areas as they know the proper techniques to help fend off an attacker. Self-defense is also about prevention, learning how to set boundaries, assert themselves and safeties de-escalate situations. It’s up to women to fight back. They should learn how to defend themselves. Learning self-defense will boost their confidence and ability to thwart or deter potential attacks. It can also break the deeply entrenched social stereotype that women are weaker than men. For example, The Gulabi Gang- ‘Rose Gang’ started in rural Uttar Pradesh by a group of women headed by Sampath Pal Devi, which held sticks (lathis) in their hand and spoke against domestic abuse and gender base violence. In Bangladesh Pritilata Brigade also working on it.

By observing this Pragroshor organized two self-defense training for their community and individual beneficiaries with the facilitation of expert trainer of self-defense technique. Almost 46 participants were received this training. After receiving training their self-mental strength has been boosted and now, they can protest any abusive and violence incidence in their areas. After completing two self-defense training, Pragroshor team has arranged refreshers self-defense training again based on the demand of participants along with the donor on 16 & 17 October 2022, especially for videography. As it was a refresher training, we have invited 24 participants from previous training courses. The training was organized in Karate-Do on those days. Two professional videographers have captured all videos and taken photographs. It was captured by professional photographers because according to the donor all videos and photographs will be delivered to GAC for showing the women empowerment scenario under the Women Voice and Leadership Program.

As Pragroshor took the first initiative to arrange self-defense training for the survivors for enhancing their self-esteem and confidence so the donor part has requested to arrange it again due to hand over documentation for their direct donor.
