Celebrating 16 Days of Activism

International Day for the Elimination of Violence again st Women is being celebrated globally every year from 25th November to 10th December. It is a worldwide campaign to oppose violence against women and children. Pragroshor also celebrated this event from 25th November to 10th December every year with various activities. The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day. It was started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Institute in 1991 and continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Women’s Global Leadership. It is used as an organizing strategy by individuals and organizations around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. During the 16 Days of Activism, people around the world will unite to raise awareness about gender-based violence, challenge discriminatory attitudes and call for improved laws and services to end violence against women for good.

Violence against women continues to occur at an alarming scale in every country in the world. Too often it is accepted as normal behavior and the global culture of discrimination against women allows violence to occur with impunity. Recent movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp have propelled this issue onto the global stage. However, violence against women is a global problem and it requires global action. Calls for action like the 16 days of Activism are crucial because they shine a spotlight on the issue of violence against women. They are a moment to create public awareness about what needs to change to prevent it from happening in the first place at local, national, regional, and international levels. Like many other organizations, Pragroshor also commemorated 16 days of activism with different ways and colors at various places in Dhaka city. The event started with different activities like- upload case stories of violence survivors on an online platform, webinar on mental health counseling, Orange Adda with women from different sectors in Dhaka, awareness meeting with community people at slum area, and so on.
